BCCI Maintains Ban: Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Will Not Play Overseas Leagues!

IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal has firmly shut the door on the possibility of top Indian cricketers participating in overseas franchise leagues, citing national workload management as the top priority

.

In a clear statement on the issue, Dhumal emphasized the exclusive nature of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the heavy domestic schedule for national players. The policy means superstars like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Shubman Gill are restricted to playing for India and in the IPL, unlike cricketers from other nations who are free to join multiple T20 leagues globally

.

The Core Reasons: Workload and Domestic Duty

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) mandates that contracted international players must also participate in domestic tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

. Dhumal argued that with such a packed calendar in India, there is simply no room for players to add foreign league commitments.

“At the moment, there is no chance for the big players. How can they go? Some players are even playing in three formats. Workload management is key,” Dhumal stated. He used premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah as an example, noting that players often require scheduled rest after intense series like Tests

.

Focus on National Team Success

The underlying principle is the protection of the national team’s interests. Dhumal suggested that allowing players to compete in additional leagues abroad could negatively impact their performance for India

. This stance reinforces the IPL’s unique position as the world’s premier T20 league, where the biggest Indian stars are exclusively available.

Regarding the future of veterans Kohli and Sharma, Dhumal dismissed any speculation about their retirement plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup, calling them “living legends” whose fitness and motivation should not be questioned

.

Looking Ahead

Fans can expect to see Kohli and Sharma next in action during the domestic Vijay Hazare Trophy and in India’s upcoming ODI series against New Zealand

. Their careers will continue to be centered on Indian cricket, with the IPL remaining their sole franchise league commitment for the foreseeable future.
